When you get addicted to the Star Wars Saga, you want to dig in more and more. You want to learn all the legends, primitive stories, everything about the characters, Jedis, Siths, and all about the races and planets. Yet, there is something you want to go in-depth about more than anything, and that is lightsabers, the ultimate weapon, and beauty of Star Wars Saga.

We have been watching many different kinds of lightsabers since our childhood. You may have wondered what types of lightsabers are in Star Wars and which Jedi or Sith used them. No need to wonder anymore, because now you will get your answer in detail. So, let’s dig in.

1) Standard Lightsaber

Standard lightsabers are very common lightsabers used by the majority of the Jedi. In nature, the green and blue colors of Kyber crystals are common, so most of the standard lightsabers are blue and green in color. However, some rare colors can also be seen in these standard lightsabers like white, yellow, or purple.

Although thousands of Jedis use the blue and green colored lightsabers, let’s talk about the prominent ones. First, we saw a Jedi Master Qui-Gon using a green lightsaber in “Star Wars: Episode 1,2,3.” He fought Darth Maul in the 2nd episode of the prequels along with his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan also used a standard green lightsaber like hi Master.

Obi-Wan was one of the greatest Jedi. In the same episode, he defeated Darth Maul and took his Master Qui-Gon’s revenge. He had many amazing duals with others like Grievous, Dooku, and even Darth Vader.

The first time he defeated Darth Vader, but in the second one that happened years later, he lost from him

The person who wielded a standard purple lightsaber is Mace Windu. This lightsaber was unique and powerful, and Mace Windu destroyed thousands of droids.

We can watch many other Jedis using this standard lightsaber not only in Movies or series but in almost all the canon comics. The “Jedis in Star Wars: Rebels” Kanan also used green standard lightsabers in all four seasons and faced off some dangerous enemies like inquisitors, Maul, and Darth Vader at different points.

2) CrossGuard Lightsaber

The crossguard is an ancient lightsaber used by Makashi practitioners. The lightsaber has a long blade with a cross design on the hilt known as quillons.

A Sith lord known as Darth Atrius used to own a crossguard lightsaber in earlier times. You can see it in detail in “The High Republic” comics. The famous character who uses a crossguard lightsaber is Kylo Ren. Kylo Ren, the son of Han and Leia Skywalker, used a red crossguard Skywalker in “Star Wars: Episode 7,8,9.” Most of the time, Kylo Ren dueled with Rey with his crossguard lightsaber in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” And “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

His lightsaber emitted plasma because his Kyber crystal was cracked and unstable. He used the crossguard lightsaber until he came out of the dark side. In “Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker,” he threw his red crossguard lightsaber away after returning from the dark side.

Although these two were the main users of crossguard lightsabers, in the canon story, A Jedi Stallon Gios also used a blue crossguard lightsaber during the Galactic Republic times. You can also read “The High Republic” comic to detail the blue crossguard lightsaber.

3) Sith Lightsabers

The lightsaber owned and used by Sith lords are known as Sith lightsabers. The Sith know the ways for the Force but are lured into the dark side. A Sith lightsaber has a common look of other lightsabers except for its red-colored blade.

The Kyber crystal to create red lightsabers does not exist in nature. The Sith lords go through a ritual known as bleeding to turn a normal Kyber crystal into the red by pouring their negative emotions like anger, fear, or hatred.

All the Sith lords shown in Star Wars Saga used the Sith Lightsabers. We saw a Sith lightsaber in “Star Wars Episodes 4, 5, and 6.” Used by Darth Vader. Then more Sith lords Darth Sidious, Count Dooku, and Lord Grievous appeared with their Sith Lightsabers in Star Wars prequels “Episode 1, 2, 3.”

Almost every star wars series like “Clone Wars.” “Rebels.” “The Mandalorian” and “The Bad Batch”, Darth Vader, and Sidious were seen using their Sith lightsabers. Other than that, Most of the comics, legends, and series had the appearance of Sith lightsabers.

Sith lightsabers were used in famous duels like Darth Sidious against Master Yoda. Darth Vader used his Sith lightsaber against Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Luke Skywalker, and many more during the Galactic Empire era. Count Dooku also used it against Yoda and Obi-Wan before order 66.

4) Double-Bladed Lightsaber

A double-bladed lightsaber is one of the coolest lightsabers in terms of appearance. It is like a long blade with a hilt inside and blades on both sides. This type of lightsaber was owned by very few users, probably because of how difficult it would be to use properly.

The prominent character who used a double-bladed lightsaber is Darth Maul. Since he was a Sith Lord, his lightsaber blades were pure red-colored. Darth Maul was a strong character to the used dark side of the Force.

In “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” Darth Maul used his double-bladed lightsaber against the duo Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Master Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn. How effective this double-bladed lightsaber was against those two Jedis left us all thrilled. That was a great fight, and Darth Maul managed to kill Qui-Gon. He failed against Obi-wan and fell off into the space and assumed dead.

He appeared again in the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” series. The most prominent fight in this series was Darth Maul vs. Ahsoka Tano. Again he appeared in many seasons of the “Star Wars: The Rebels” series and had some awesome fighting moments against Kanan Garel, Ahsoka Tano, and Ezra Bridger.

There are a few other characters who used double-bladed lightsabers. Asajj Ventress, known as the assassin of the Sith, also used a double-bladed lightsaber in the “Clone Wars” series. If you have played “Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order,” you know a character named Kal Kestis also used a double-bladed lightsaber.

Tosan, a Female Jedi master, also used a yellow double-bladed lightsaber during the times of the Galactic Republic. You can watch her in Star Wars: Galaxy of Heros and Age of Republic if you want to know more.

5) Dual-Phase Lightsaber

A dual-phase lightsaber is unique as a combination of one, two, or more Kyber crystals are needed to craft a lightsaber. A dual-phase lightsaber can be double or triple times in length compared to an average lightsaber because of its multiple Kyber crystals.

The most prominent character who used a dual-phase lightsaber is Darth Vader. Although his lightsaber looked like a normal Sith lightsaber, the extra-long length of his saber was an element of surprise for the ones fighting against him. During the Imperial era, Engineers of the Empire crafted Vader’s lightsaber with an artificial Sinth crystal and a natural Kyber crystal.

Darth Vader is one of the main characters of Star Wars Saga. We watched him many times using his dual-phase lightsaber after the fall of the Republic. He fought against Ezra, Ahsoka, and Kanan many times in “Star Wars: Rebels.”

He also fought and defeated his former Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in “Star Wars A New Hope.” Movie. His appearance in “Star Wars: Rogue on” was amazing when he came to attack a batch of the resistance and deflected their bullets with his dual-phase lightsaber. Two times, he fought against his son Luke Skywalker and cut his hand off the first time with his dual-phase lightsaber.

Apart from Vader, Count Dooku’s lightsaber was also dual-phase which he used against Obi-Wan, Anakin Skywalker, and Master Yoda in Star Wars: Episodes 1, 2, and 3. Other characters who used a dual-phase lightsaber are Gantoris, Kairan, and Corran Horn. All of these 3 were great Jedis and served the Galactic Republic during the Jedi Order.

6) Shoto Lightsaber

The word Shoto lightsabers are smaller in size and length as the word Shoto can also be referred to the as short lightsaber in Star Wars. Shoto lightsabers are originally supposed to be used as an off-hand weapon to assist the main lightsaber. Warriors with an aggressive and special fighting style like Jar’kai tend to use Shoto lightsaber.

Shoto lightsaber is an ancient type used by Jedi Master Kavar during the Sith wars. Korriban and Yuthura ban were apprentices of a Sith in the old times. They also used a red Shoto lightsaber as an off-hand weapon. Read the “Knights of the Old Republic” and relevant comics for deeper details.

Although it is supposed to be used with the other hand to assist in the fight, Jedi Master Yoda also wielded a Shoto blade as his main weapon. Since he was short in size, the Shoto lightsaber was a perfect match for him. Even the Shoto lightsaber is small but quite efficient in size as we watched Yoda fighting against Count Dooku and Palpatine in “Star Wars: Episode 2, 3.”

More About It

Ahsoka Tano is another main character who wielded Shoto lightsaber. She learned the fighting style of Jar’kai and crafted an extra Shoto lightsaber to support her style fully. We can see her using a green Shoto lightsaber which was later turned to a blue lightsaber by his Master Anakin.

She faced off Maul, had an amazing exhibition of his blue lightsabers and fighting style. She captured her in Clone Wars. You can also watch her many various fights with Assajj Ventress, who also used two lightsabers in the “Star Wars the Clone Wars.” series.

When she abandoned both her lightsabers after Order 66, she crafted new lightsabers. She used a standard and a Shoto white lightsabers, which she took from an inquisitor and purified before crafting the saber.

Her white Shoto lightsaber is a real piece of art. In “Star Wars: Rebels.” Series, she had some amazing fighting moments with inquisitors, Maul, and even Darth Vader.

7) Training Lightsaber

“For 8000 years, I have trained Jedis,” said Master Yoda while training younglings. This lightsaber is also known as a youngling lightsaber since it trains younglings. In that 2nd episode of Star Wars, we saw the younglings holding training lightsabers. These lightsabers were green and blue in color and looked like a standard lightsaber.

Training lightsabers were not standard ones and were designed specifically for training. These lightsabers had less blade length. These sabers were designed in a way to minimize the intensity of the plasma to minimize the danger of any injury.

These lightsabers are very safe and perfect for training, but it is revealed in “Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection” book that a blow of training lightsaber can be hard enough to burn the skin and numb the body. For this reason, no youngling was allowed to own the training lightsaber. The lightsabers were kept in Jedi academy, and younglings were allowed to train with them under Jedi’s supervision.

Since the training lightsabers also needed a Kyber crystal to craft, it is believed that some old or abandoned lightsabers were modified to turn them into the training lightsabers.

The training lightsabers do not have many details in the Star Wars Saga and were never used for duals. Still, you can learn a little bit of detail in comics “Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures part 6, 7” and “Out of Shadows.” The training lightsaber also appeared in “Star Wars: Rebels” episode “Mystery of Chopper Base.”

8) Curved-Hilt Lightsaber

The curved-hilt lightsaber, as the name says, has a curved hilt. Since it has this curved hilt, it was easy to grip and swing for the wielders. Like the Shoto blade, you must master a special fighting style to use the curved-hilt lightsabers properly.

The famous person who uses the curved-hilt lightsaber is Count Dooku, who got the name of Darth Tyrannous. As a Jedi Padawan in his early days, he learned to use Curved-hilt lightsabers from his Master, who also used the same type of sabers. He continued to use curved-hilt blue lightsabers until the dark side lured him.

After becoming Darth Tyrannus, he simply did the Sith ritual and turned his lightsaber into the red. He appeared as a leader of the Separatists army and fought  Obi-Wan and Master Yoda in Episode 2 of Star Wars Saga.

Ahsoka Tano, the padawan of Anakin, also used a curved-hilt lightsaber. Yes, he used a Shoto lightsaber, but her standard Shoto blade had a curved hilt. Even after changing her lightsabers and getting new white ones, she still had the curved-hilt lightsaber as they suited her battling style.

More About It

In Clone Wars, she fought against Maul with her blue lightsabers, and then in “Rebels,” she used her white lightsabers against many enemies, especially Darth Vader, and had many appearances onwards.

The third known person to use the curved hilt lightsaber is Assaj Ventress. Like Ahsoka, she used two lightsabers, and both were curved-hilt. She used her green curved-hilt lightsabers as a Padawan, but after turning to the dark side and becoming an apprentice of Darth Tyrannus. She turned her green curved-hilt lightsabers into red ones. You can watch her story in the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” series.

You can watch her fighting with Ahoksa Tano on many occasions in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”. Two female Fighters, with two curved-hilt lightsabers fighting each other, was something we do not get to see every day. She even faced off Obi-Wan and Anakin in this series.

She lost her lightsabers when a Jedi named Bariss Offee ambushed her off-guard and took her lightsabers in custody. Her lightsabers were also used by Offee himself while fighting Anakin Skywalker.

9) Lightsaber Pike

The lightsaber pike is not like an average lightsaber and cannot be used by everyone. No Jedi or Sith has wielded them in the series. Do you remember the guardians of the Jedi temple? Well, those guards used lightsaber pikes.

The lightsaber pikes have a yellow-colored blade. This color does extremely rare among Jedi or Sith. The lightsaber pike is also unique due to its shape that looks like a double-bladed lightsaber. Like the double-bladed one, it has a hilt in the center and yellow blades on both sides of the hilt.

Every Jedi temple had guards with lightsaber pikes as we watched in Star Wars Clone Wars. Ahsoka Tano fought against these lightsaber pikes during her Jedi trial in the temple. In Clone Wars, Anakin battled against Bariss Offee, and the guards used their lightsaber pikes to isolate them.

In the 2nd season of “Star Wars: Rebels.” The Jedi Kanan also fought against lightsaber pike wielder guards. Kanan went to the Jedi temple with Ahsoka and Ezra to find Master Yoda. It turns out Ezra found out Yoda but Kanan had a trial fight with temple guards. Kanan was successful in his trial and was given the title of Jedi Knight by the temple guards themselves.

The only character who wields a yellow lightsaber other than the guards is Rey. We do not know for sure if her lightsaber was Pike, but since Rey saw a Sith lightsaber Pike in her vision in “Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker”, the probability of her wielding a single-bladed lightsaber Pike is high.

10) Lightwhips

The lightwhipe is an ancient weapon used by both the Jedis and Siths in the old Sith war. Lightwhips have multiple blades; that design was achieved with lots of lightsaber modifications. The whips had multiple blades, but all of them were short in length and had a shield around them for safe use.

Many may have used Lightwhips before, but as we are told, the Jedi Varnestra Rwoh had a vision about the Lightwhip. In the vision, she found out how to modify her lightsaber in the Lightwhip.

The famous name who used Lightwhips is Lumiya, also the emperor’s hand once. The night sisters, who also go by the name of daughters of Dathomir, used Lightwhips. They were a clan of witches, and one of them, known as Assaj Ventress, became an apprentice of Count Dooky, used Lightwhips as shown in the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” series.

11) The Darksaber

The Darksaber is one of its kind, and as its name says, it has a dark blade. Darksaber has a smaller blade than an average lightsaber, but its unique design and color make it amazing. The Darksaber is more than just a saber because of its history.

The Darksaber has a long history with the Mandalorians. There are not many Mandalorian Jedis, but a famous Jedi, Tarre Vizsla, wielded the Darksaber more than a thousand years ago. The Mandalorians had been fighting for thousands of years, and Tarre Vizsla was the one to unite them all. Since that time, the Darksaber became a symbol of unity among the Mandalorians.

More About It

After the Jedi Tarre, the Darksaber was kept in the Jedi temple, which was stolen by the Mandalorians later on. The Mandalorians hold this saber sacred, and anyone who wielded it ruled the Mandalore, but he must have to win it with a dual.

It stays in Mandalore until the Clone Wars. After defeat from Obi-Wan, Maul came to Mandalore and won the Darksaber by battling with Pre Viszla and became their kind according to their custom. He kept it safe on his home planet and was later taken by Sabine Wren, a member of the phoenix squadron of rebels.

She was the daughter of the Wren clan of Mandalore, and she decided to unite the Mandalorians again with Darksaber, which she could not, but she united herself with her family. She decided to find the person who would be the leader of Mandalorians and give him the Darksaber. You can watch this in detail in 3rd season of “Star Wars: Rebels.”

Long story short, some other Mandalorians possessed the Darksaber after that event. It is said that Sabine Wren is hopefully to reclaim the dark saber again in the upcoming movies on Disney+.

12) Lightsaber Rifle

Yes, you guessed right from its name. This type of lightsaber was designed in a way to serve both as a lightsaber and a rifle. You can use it like a rifle as it fires an energy beam. The rifle is powered by the Kyber crystal infused in the lightsaber.

The Jedi Master Jocasta Nu used this type of lightsaber. During the Empire’s era, she used it against Darth Vader. Years later, Ben Solo also found a lightsaber rifle on Elphrona planet while traveling with his Master Jedi Luke Skywalker. You can have a look at the lightsaber rifle in “Star Wars: Light of the Jedi.”

13) Lightsaber-Blaster Hybrid

Like the rifle, lightsaber-blaster is another type of lightsaber we get to see in Star Wars. It is unknown to be used by any Jedi or Sith, but one Jedi, Ezra Bridger, constructed it for himself. The hilt of this lightsaber has a pistol-like shape that blasts bullets of beams.

In all the seasons of “Star Wars: Rebels,” Ezra Bridger can be seen using the lightsaber blaster both as a lightsaber and a pistol. Since Ezra Bridger was force-sensitive, he was able to blast those beam bullets from this lightsaber hybrid. Ezra had some amazing action moments with his lightsaber blaster. In the Rebels series, he fought with his Master Jedi Kanan, Sabine, Maul, Inquisitors, and even Darth Vader.

14) Great Lightsaber

The great lightsaber is indeed a great weapon because of its giant size made for large beings. The blade of the great lightsaber is more than 3 meters long. No one in Star Wars Saga is told who used the great lightsaber.

Its big size with a thick and large plasma blade made it very effective in battles. Similarly, humans or other small-sized species find it very difficult to use a great lightsaber because of its size and weight.

We did not get to see anyone using the great lightsaber in any Star Wars movies or series. However, it appeared for the first time in the “Star Wars: Jedi Knight” video game.

15) The Broad Saber

Unlike the standard lightsabers, the broad lightsaber has a broad hilt making it look like a primitive sword. It is a special type of lightsaber which has a more surface on its blade, making it less likely to cut through anything as easily as any other lightsaber.

Due to its blade, most of the Jedis prefer not to use the broad lightsaber. Still, it is said that some unknown Jedis used the broad lightsaber since it was quite an effective weapon for the FORM 1 technique.

In the book “Knights of Fate,” broad saber is mentioned for the first time. After that, it only appeared in “Fantasy Flight Games 2018.” We hopefully will get to learn more about Broad lightsabers in future movies or Star Wars series.
