Customize Your Lightsaber. Custom lightsabers are a unique addition to your lightsaber needs as you can forge a lightsaber by choosing your own parts and building a custom lightsaber that represents the force that is only present within you! Making those toy lightsabers that you used to clash with your friends and siblings during your childhood is really easy. On the other hand, it requires technical knowledge and skill to build a custom lightsaber which is by no means an easy task and will require you to procure the right parts and tools to accomplish. In addition to the right skills and materials, customizing a lightsaber is not without costs.

Most of these requirements can be daunting and fearful for beginners aiming to build their first custom lightsaber but don’t worry we at ZIA Sabers have got you covered as confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi! Follow our comprehensive guide to know everything for building custom lightsabers and add your own personal touch.

Customize Your Lightsaber

In order to customize Your Lightsaber that is as accurate as the ones, you see in the movies and video games you need to know beforehand what are the components that are used to build a lightsaber. The lightsaber is mainly made of two parts: the hilt and the blade. Although it seems simple there are much smaller components inside the hilt and the blade that you need to know about. We can break these down to:

  • Hilt
  • Blade
  • Coupler
  • Emitter
  • Pommel
  • Activation switch
  • Sound
  • Effects

In addition to this, you also have to consider other things and accessories such as coupler, blade length, blade plug, battery, speaker, brightness, and effects while crafting custom lightsabers.

Hilts

The hilt is the part of the lightsaber that your hand holds while swinging a lightsaber at your opponents or while moving into a stance while cosplaying as your favorite Jedi or Sith warriors. The right choice of the hilt is largely dependent on your personal choice for style and aesthetics as well as practical considerations for housing the electronics & soundboard. The length and thickness of the hilt are also important as it should grip smoothly into the size of the user’s hands.

Blades

The blade is the narrowest part of your lightsaber, but it is the part that is directly involved in combat while striking an opponent’s lightsaber blade which is why it is important to choose the right blade that is tough enough to withstand the harsh lightsaber strikes in intense combat of Jedi vs Sith. There are different blade types to choose from as well as the length of the blade that goes into determining the right blade choice for your unique custom lightsabers. The blade is made from a polycarbonate tube that can diffuse the light and also withstand dueling.

As with any lightsaber, the choice of components first and foremost depends on what you require from the lightsaber. There are different blade choices based on your needs. If you are looking for a blade for cosplay that displays the maximum brightness with a realistic Star Wars look then that blade might not be suitable for heavy dueling. The two most common types of blades are:

Midgrade – These are best utilized for light dueling but provide maximum brightness for a lightsaber. You can easily perform spinning techniques due to their lightweight. Midgrade blades slightly bend on impact but do not break. These are best for cosplayers as they provide realistic photos.

Heavy grade – These blades are twice as heavy as midgrade blades and the polycarbonate tubing wall is twice as thick. Heavy grade blades are best suited for heavy dueling and they last longer due to their durability.

Apart from this, there are standard blades and Neopixel blades. The Neopixel blade forms the Neopixel lightsaber that has LEDs inside the blade rather than inside the hilt like a standard RGB lightsaber which allows it to shine brighter and provide more effects.

Blade length

The blade length is an important aspect of the blade in a custom lightsaber to ensure it matches your size.

The standard sizes available are 24 inches, 32 inches, and 36 inches.36 inches is the most common blade size and the default choice. 32 inches blade is most common for double-bladed sabers that require a coupler to make a saber staff that was donned by the villainous Darth Maul.

Coupler

These are used for assembling the hilts of two lightsabers together to make a double-bladed lightsaber or a saber staff. Darth Maul looked pretty cool with one so be sure to add a coupler if you are looking to make a saber staff.

Blade Plug

The blade plug is a small cylindrical piece of polycarbonate installed at the end of the hilt when you don’t have a blade in your lightsaber. It increases safety as it stops the light from shining directly into someone’s eyes. It also gives a cool and complete look.

Emitter

It is connected to the hilt and used to hold the blade in place by tightly clutching it. Emitters also add to the overall aesthetic of the lightsaber but like other parts, it is important to know what is your purpose for the lightsaber. There are emitters with windows that give a cool look by letting the light shine through in cut gaps. Emitters might also have claws like the ones on Rey’s golden lightsaber. If you are into dueling then an emitter with claws does not add much value as it could get broken during the duels.

Pommel

The pommel is the part of the hilt at the end which is used for housing the components inside the hilt such as the battery, speaker, wires, and soundboard. The pommel also serves as the counterbalance for the blade.

Activation Switch

The activation switch is used to turn the lightsaber on and also to switch between different effects.

Sound

Lightsabers would be no fun without the sound. The soundboard controls the sound and effects within a lightsaber. There is the smooth swing – the sound and hum that the lightsaber makes changes based on the speed of the movement at which you swing the lightsaber. The sound will be different for slow, fast, long, and short swings to provide a smoother lightsaber experience. You can also have sound features such as the blaster bolt deflect and the clashing sound when two lightsabers strike.

Effects

There are different effects you can do with your custom lightsabers. Some of the effects are only possible with a Neopixel lightsaber such as the scroll-on effect, unstable lightsaber effect, and rainbow effect. Other features include blaster bolt deflect effect, lightsaber flash on clash effect, blade lock-up effect, and flicker effect. You can also change the color of your lightsaber and among the custom lightsabers, you can get millions of colors in the Neopixel lightsaber.

Using this guide as a starting point you can develop your own custom lightsaber but if you still have any questions, we would love to talk to you. You can talk to the ZIA Sabers team to get help in Customize Your Lightsaber
