Darth Maul is an iconic Star Wars character who plays an important role in the story. He appeared as a powerful Sith lord for the first time in “Star Wars: Phantom Menace.”  Besides this movie, Darth Maul was also a part of the Clone Wars and Rebels series.

Darth Maul wielded a double-bladed lightsaber, as seen in the first episode of Star Wars. As the story moved on, we saw him wielding many other lightsabers. We see different Darth Maul lightsabers in Rebels and Clone Wars too. So, how many lightsabers did Darth Maul have? Let’s dive deep into the knowledge of Darth Maul’s lightsabers.

Darth Maul’s Double-Bladed Lightsaber

Darth Maul wielded a unique lightsaber from the rest of the Jedis and Sith lords. As seen in the first episode, he wielded a lightsaber with two blades. His hilt of the lightsaber was much longer than usual and had two emitters on it. Both the emitters emitted a red blade. So, Darth Maul had a lightsaber with blades on both sides. That is why this type of lightsaber is called a Double-bladed lightsaber.

Darth Maul used this lightsaber in his first duel against Qui-Gon Jinn on Tattoine. He was the first Sith Lord who appeared in the Republic after centuries. His lightsaber fighting skills put fear in the hearts of strong Jedis. Fighting against a double-bladed lightsaber was not easy, even for skilled Jedis. Intense training made it easier for Darth Maul to wield a double-bladed lightsaber. He did it by joining two lightsabers from the hilt. Control of two blades allowed him to fight multiple opponents at once.

Darth Maul again fought against Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan on planet Naboo. We get to see some amazing action on his part. He fought both the master and the apprentice single-handedly. He even killed Qui-Gon Jinn in that fight. However, his apprentice turned out to be a tougher opponent than expected. Obi-Wan managed to cut the double-bladed lightsaber from the center. Half part of Maul’s lightsaber got lost as Obi-Wan defeated him on Naboo.

Darth Maul’s Lightsaber Name?

Darth Maul’s lightsaber did not have a specific name. He wielded a special type of lightsaber, known as a Double-bladed lightsaber. This type of lightsaber is also famous as the lightsaber staff. The name came from its appearance. Most lightsabers look like swords, but a double-bladed lightsaber looks like a long wooden stick. Hence, a long staff with blades on both sides became a lightsaber staff. His lightsaber is remembered as Darth Maul’s lightsaber staff among the Star Wars community.

How Long is Darth Maul’s Lightsaber?

The double-bladed lightsabers are rare among Force users. We are not sure if the length of this lightsaber varies in ancient times. Normally, the length of the blade of the double-bladed lightsaber is 30” to 40”, and the hilt length ranges from 20” to 26”. It depended on the size of the user. We know one Jedi, Jaro Tapal, from Clone Wars, who wielded a double-bladed blue lightsaber. His broken half lightsaber was 17.8”. So, so the total length would be more than 35”.

Thankfully, we know the exact length of Darth Maul’s lightsaber from canon sources. His hilt’s length is 21” long and 34” after including the blade. So, Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber was long enough for his size.

If you buy Darth Maul’s lightsaber toy, it will have the 36” length mostly in the market. You get a two inches longer lightsaber than the power Sith lord.

Darth Maul’s Single Bladed Lightsaber

After Darth Maul’s demise on Naboo, everyone thought him to be dead. Yet, he appeared again during the Clone Wars. We saw him using a single-bladed red lightsaber. Some say he used the remaining half of his lightsaber. Others say he created a new single standard lightsaber for himself.

The first thing he did was challenge the ruler of Mandalore. According to Mandalorian customs, anyone who wins the Darksaber in a fight gets to rule the Mandalore planet. He fought against Tee Vizsla with his single-bladed lightsaber.

Tee Vizsla was a skilled warrior wielding the Darksaber. Still, he was no match for a fallen Sith lord. Darth Maul easily defeated him and became the ruler of Mandalore.

Darth Maul began to use both his standard red lightsaber and the Darksaber. As seen in the Clone Wars, he wielded both these lightsabers against Darth Sidious and in many other fights. But, for some reason, we did not see him using the Darksaber much. The only reason could be that he got his double-bladed lightsaber back.

Darth Maul Lightsaber Rebels

Darth Maul used a double-bladed lightsaber in the Rebels series too. But, his lightsaber type was different than the one he used before.

Darth Maul’s Lightsaber Cane

As seen in Clone Wars, Assajj Ventress found the other half of his red lightsaber. So, he recreated his double-bladed lightsaber. This new lightsaber was different in appearance from his older lightsaber. The hilt of this lightsaber looked like a wooden cane or stick.

He was skilled with this type of lightsaber and preferred to use it over a standard lightsaber or Darksaber. He used a lightsaber cane as a walking stick as well to pretend to be an older man. As seen in Rebels, he used this technique to convince Ezra to unlock the Sith Holocron.

Prior to that,  we saw Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber in action in the Clone Wars finale. The finale of Clone Wars was aired after the Rebels series. But, chronologically it tells the earlier story. We get to see the same old powerful Darth Maul when he fought against Ahsoka Tano. He lost against Ahsoka, and she captured him, but he escaped during the execution of Order 66.

Darth Maul continued to use his double-bladed lightsaber cane until his last fight. He was searching for Obi-Wan to get his revenge. He found Obi-Wan on Tattoine and reached there to kill him. But, like the last time, Obi-Wan defeated him again. What happened to Darth Maul’s rebel lightsaber cane is still unknown. My guess is that Obi-Wan buried Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber somewhere in the desert.
