Lightsabers have always been the center of attention for Star Wars fans. We have watched these glowing swords stealing our hearts many times. No matter how many times we rewatch the lightsaber duels, we just feel the same as we enjoyed for the first time. Some fans just want to learn more and more about lightsabers.

Their curiosity about the lightsabers just keeps on growing. Now that we have seen what a lightsaber can do, we want to know how lightsabers work? What principle do they follow? Where does the energy come from to operate these blades? Let’s find out.

Lightsabers are nothing like traditional swords that you need some Iron to forge. They are a mix of nature, talent, skill, and technology. Many different components combine together to make a lightsaber that can produce a blade of up to 25000 Celcius temperature. Let’s see those components one by one.

How many Colors do Kyber crystals have?

These Kyber crystals are different in colors. The common ones are green and blue, which explains why so many Jedis have green and blue lightsabers. Some other colored Kyber crystals are rare in nature, like purple, white, yellow, and black. All we know is that Mace Windu was the only Jedi to wield a purple lightsaber, and Ahsoka Tano was the only one to wield white lightsabers. Similarly, only one black lightsaber existed and was owned by the people of Mandalore.

So, the question may arise, if these Kyber crystals are the energy source behind the plasma blades, do they go out of energy? The answer is no! Kyber crystals are rare materials with infinite energy stored in them. The legends also say that they tend to absorb energy continuously from nature.

Kyber Crystal defines the lightsaber’s Qualities

What kind of lightsaber a wielder has depends on the crystal’s qualities and connection with the Force user. Many different lightsabers like Shota lightsaber, standard lightsaber, double-bladed, and many more. The red Kyber crystal does not exist in nature, so Sith pours negative emotions in Kyber crystals, ultimately turning it red.

Kylo Ren’s lightsaber is a unique example. Since his Kyber crystal was cracked, his lightsaber emits an irregular and unpredictable shape of plasma.

Kyber Crystals

Kyber crystals, also known as the focusing crystals, are the main powerhouse of lightsabers. These crystals are rare in nature and can only be found on a few planets. After passing all the trials, every Padawan has to find the Kyber crystal that connects with him. He will then craft a lightsaber with the Kyber crystals.

Power Cells

Let’s come back to the components, and how do lightsabers work? The next component that keeps this killing machine running is the power cells. Yes! Kyber crystals are the energy house for the lightsaber. Still, we need extra power to extract the crystal’s energy and keep the whole hilt running.

Since the Star Wars galaxy is more advanced in technology than our world, they developed power cells that were small enough to fit inside the hilt and store high amounts of energy. Some Jedi also kept some extra Diatanium cells with them in an emergency.

However, the very first lightsabers were not that advanced. About a thousand years, at the beginning of lightsabers stuff, they used external power cells as they were too large to fit inside the hilt. They connected those cells to the hilt with a cord that could get cut during the fights and were not reliable enough. So as time passed, lightsabers evolved.

Hilt

The hilt of a lightsaber is not just a handle but hardware connecting all the dots. To be honest, it is the coolest part of a lightsaber, in my opinion, since you can design your unique-looking hilt. We saw many different types of hilts wielded by different Force users.

There was no unique material that you needed to build a lightsaber. You can build a hilt out of everything. Like we saw Ezra Bridger design his hilt combined with a pistol. Similarly, Corran Horn used some parts of a vehicle to build his hilt. As long as the hardware is great, the appearance does not matter.

However, technically, the hilt should be made of rigid and reliable material like metal. Secondly, the material should be an insulator or insulated from the power cells. Some professional big-eyed alien engineers designed the lightsabers of Jedis or Sith, and their hilts never happened to short circuit.

Everything inside the hilt is connected with a switch. The Jedi or the Sith needs to hold the switch to keep the lightsaber on. When they turn on the switch, the power cells extract a high amount of Kyber crystal’s energy in plasma. This plasma then takes the shape of a beam. The beam is about 800 to 25000 Celcius in temperature and can cut everything.

Lifting the hand from the switch will turn it off. As we have seen, lightsabers turn off right after they are dropped from the hand of the Jedi of Sith or anyone for that matter.

So, the design of a lightsaber looks so complex yet so simple. Nevertheless, lightsabers can do wonders, and one of those is getting us fans addicted to watching them.
