The lightsabers are the first thing that comes to any fan’s mind while talking about Star Wars. The ultimate Jedi and Sith sword-like weapons with the ability to cut almost everything. All that so easily, like cutting a piece of butter with a knife.

Even the lightsaber is a complete and perfect weapon; still, some mysteries about lightsabers keep the fans wondering. Like, Why do lightsabers turn off when dropped. Is this a safety precaution, or is it a weakness? Let’s talk about it.

During the first movies released in the 70s and 80s, we saw the lightsaber turning off right after it dropped off Luke’s hand during the fight with his father. Similarly, the same thing happened to Anakin, Qui-Gon, and Obi-Wan in the prequels.

Similarly, Mace Windu and Yoda against Palpatine had the same situation with their lightsabers. We kept seeing this in all the rest of the movies and Tv series.

First of all, the lightsaber is a weapon only Jedi can use properly. I mean, others can turn it on but will not be able to use them as efficiently. Secondly, we have seen the Jedi using Force to pick their lightsabers every time they dropped them. So, if the user is not the master of this weapon like the Jedis and does not know the Force’s ways, he may end up hurting himself.

This dangerous ability of this weapon is one of the main reasons it turns off when falling to the ground. George Lucas has made the Star Wars Galaxy very different from our world. Yet, many of the rules and laws of this ‘Far Far Away Galaxy’ are just like ours. One of them is that plasma with a temperature as high as 25000 Celcius can cut through almost anything instantly.

Safety Switch

So, this will be easier to understand. A lightsaber with such a high-temperature blade can cut through the ground all the way to the core of the planet when dropped. To avoid this misconception, Star Wars officials explained about the Safety switch. This switch needs to be held while using the lightsaber.

If the lightsaber is dropped from hand, the switch will turn off, and the lightsaber goes off. This switch is also useful to avoid slipping the turned-on lightsaber from the hand during lightsaber fencing. Be it a real fight or a friendly dual, it can seriously damage anyone coming in its way.

Although the safety switch is considered a precaution, some believe it to be the weakness of the lightsaber that needs to be improved. According to them, the safety switch can be a hindrance during the fight. Holding a lightsaber can be tricky when holding the switch with your thumb, and it can affect your battle performance. Similarly, if the switch gets stuck, the lightsaber will not turn off and can harm the user’s surrounding people.

So, to avoid such situations in which you can hurt others or yourself, Geoge Lucas designed Lightsabers in a way to automatically turn off when it dropped off from the hand.

Some people also believe the Jedi can turn off and on the lightsaber at the will of the Force. This is highly unlikely, and there is no authentic information regarding this. Yes, they can move objects with Force, especially the lightsaber, as we have often watched them do it. Still, they cannot turn the lightsabers on and off at will.

It is logical that they use the Force to keep the switch on hold, so they do not have to focus on the switch with their hand, which covers its weakness of holding the switch with hand. Holding a switch with the hand can divert the attention, and even one second of distraction can cost you your life in Jedi Sith battles.

One time lightsaber didn’t turn off when dropped.

I am sure you have watched “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.” Released in 1980 and is also known as Episode 4. You may remember Luke’s training under Master Yoda on Dagobah planet. During the training, Luke faced off the vision of Darth Vader. When he stroked Vader, the Lightsaber of Vader did not turn off after falling down.

Paying a little bit of attention will answer it. Right after he killed Vader, he realized it was a vision, and the person behind the helmet was not Vader but Luke himself. The vision’s purpose was to expose himself to the idea that if he keeps fearing things and making mistakes, he might fall to the dark side like his father. Whatever the purpose was, the lightsaber did not turn off because it was not an actual lightsaber but a vision.

So, why does lightsaber turn off when dropped? The answer is simply the safety switch that can be used efficiently with Force and avoid putting everything in your surroundings.
