You are probably enjoying the Show while it moves towards the end of the Empire, but you may be getting more questions coming into your mind. After the Clone Wars series, you may have adapted with the art, but still, more and more variations from their Movie counterparts are confusing you.

While watching the Rebel series, the main question that arises to mind is, why are the lightsabers so thin in Rebels. You want to know if there is a legit reason or just a lazy work of the producers.

Many people think the animated art of the Rebel series is not just for the fans but to get the kids hooked with the Show. The Show’s connection with its prequels and sequels seems to answer otherwise. The main focus of the producers was the main characters like Leia Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Darth Vader, and Maul.

Although these characters had only a few moments throughout the series, they seemed to be the reason for the Show’s success. Such a complex story connecting the past and the future clearly cannot be the focus to grab the kids’ attention. Then why are the lightsabers so thin in rebels?

Ralph McQuarrie’s Art

To keep the Rebel series in flow with the Clone Wars and keep it fit nicely with the Movies of Star Wars, The producer went back to the original foundational Star Wars art of Ralph McQuarrie.

Ralph McQuarrie was the visual design artist who designed many of Star Wars’ prominent elements, such as the droids like R2-D2 and C-3P0. He also designed Darth Vader’s helmet, which became sensational. He designed the original lightsabers that were much thinner than the Sabers we saw in the movies.

Yes, the original Lightsabers design we saw in the 70s, and now we see in the Rebels series, was a thinner blade. The concept of the lightsaber Ralph illustrated was thin, long, and thicker from the base of the blade. It was also a little more translucent than the dense color we watched in the Movies.

The Rebels producer’s team took Ralph McQuarrie’s art as an inspiration to design the lightsabers. The Movies that came later on, like “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” and onwards, did not follow the foundational design of lightsabers.

Not just the thin lightsabers design was adopted for the Rebels show, but the whole Show’s animation was produced while taking Ralph’s art as an inspiration. The planet Lothal the home planet of Ezra Bridger was the main focus, more like it was a planet against the Empire.

The landscapes of Lothal, the doom-like structures, the temple, white towers, and even Loth wolves were all inspired by the original art of Ralph McQuarrie. The main Capital city with rounded tops roofs of buildings presents Ralph’s illustration as well. Then comes the Lasat race; Zeb characters, particularly Raplh McQuarrie, gave this design for the “Chewbacca” race, which was later taken for the “Lasat” race in the Rebel series.

Ralph’s illustrations

According to Ralph’s illustrations, that funny droid Chopper, who was a member of the Rebel team, was supposed to be what R2-D2 should look like. That design was for R2-D2, which was embraced for Chopper droid in the Rebel series.

Then the core characters from the Clone Wars Series, Ahsoka Tano, Rex, and Mual, all looked different from Clone Wars looked different in Rebels. They had round and matured faces, as illustrated by Ralph McQuarrie.

So, the answer to ‘why are lightsabers so thin in Rebels’ does have the logical explanation of Ralph McQuarrie’s art adaptation. Although the lightsabers are the essence of Star Wars, ironically, it has always been the subject of experiments.

These changes in lightsabers designs have become a hot topic for the fans. Some appreciate the adaptation of the original art, while others believe the designs should be consistent throughout the Saga. Whatever the case, Ralph McQuarrie’s art in the Rebel series has given the Show exceptional taste. Rebels series feel very real, and the lightsabers are even amazing and realistic than the Movie’s counterparts.
