The lightsaber is the ultimate weapon in Star Wars Galaxy. The guardians of the Galaxy, Jedi, use them for fighting, deflecting bullets, and slicing stuff. As a Star Wars fan, you may have wondered at least once about how the lightsaber works? How does a hot plasma blade come out of its handle? What keeps it all operating? Here we will discuss about Top 15 Lightsaber Hilt.

If you think about these questions, you need to learn more about lightsaber hilts. So, let’s learn about Star Wars lightsaber hilts in detail. A lightsaber hilt is an amazing device that does the impossible of igniting an extremely high-temperature blade. We see it as a perfect weapon, but it was not always like that. It took the hilt centuries of evolution to finally reach the level of perfection.

The first lightsaber hilt was created with the invention of the lightsaber itself. It happened thousands of years before Jedi, or the Republic even existed. The ancestors of the Jedis and the Sith lords known as Je’Daii created the first lightsaber hilt with a cumbersome. They power the hilt with a separate battery they carry inside a backpack and connect the two with a cord.

More About Lightsabers

At this point, they did not know about the Kyber crystals. They used some sort of Force manipulations to ignite the blade. It was called Force Saber and Protosaber.

As time passed, the Je’Daii started to advance in technology. The thousands of years of advancement in technology also positively affected the lightsaber hilts. The Jedi Order had already come into existence when they created the first advanced lightsaber hilt. They learned how to use Kyber crystals in the Proto-Saber and created a hilt. The first lightsaber hilt was created with a Brylark tree. This tree is known to be as strong as metal.

What is Darksaber Hilt made of?

The Darksaber normally looks like a Standard-type lightsaber with a standard hilt. Although, he is very different from any other lightsaber hilt. “The Book of Boba Fett.” Explained a little more about the Darksaber hilt.

The hilt of the Darksaber is made of pure Beskar material. Beskar is a lightsaber-resistant material and has been used by the Mandalorians for thousands of years. It was also said that the Darksaber does not contain a Kyber crystal. The Beskar material is also the one that powers the Darksaber.

Beskar is a material, not an energy source, and how it powers the blade is yet not explained in the series.

Types of Hilts

A lightsaber hilt is a lightsaber device that confines all its functions and parts. All the functioning parts like the activator switch, blade emitter, emitter shroud, pommel cap, focusing lens, and power switch are fixed inside the hilt. These parts function combined to emit a plasma blade, commonly known as a lightsaber blade. To power the lightsaber hilt, Diatium batteries are used. These batteries are also fixed inside the hilt with the rest of the parts.

All these energy parts are focused around the main lightsaber energy source called Kyber crystals. The Kyber crystals are rare crystals in Star Wars Galaxy and have infinite energy. Upon turning the activator switch, all the parts work together to drain energy from the Kyber crystal and use the energy to ignite the lightsaber blade.

A lightsaber hilt is not just a working device but also a handle of a lightsaber. The hilts are designed for comfortable grips of the Jedis as they must be able to use them comfortably. So, all the functioning devices and the handle is what we collectively call a lightsaber hilt.

Initially, there was only a standard lightsaber hilt. With time more and more advanced versions of lightsaber hilts started appearing. The Original trilogy events happened thousands of years after the lightsaber was invented. Before the event of the new Republic, all types of lightsaber hilts had been created and used by thousands of Jedis in the Old Republic.

There are 15 types of lightsaber hilts. Some of them are more commonly used than others.

1 Standard Hilt

The standard hilt is the first-ever hilt, and most Jedis or Sith lords use the standard type hilt. The standard hilt Sith lords use to have some modifications of additional synthetic crystals. They also call it the Sith lightsaber.

2 Double-Bladed Lightsaber

A double-bladed lightsaber hilt has an emitter on both ends of the hilt, and it emits a blade on both sides of the hilt. The famous Sith lord who used a Double-bladed lightsaber is Darth Maul.

3 Hinged Double-Bladed lightsaber

You may have guessed from the name. A Hinged Double-bladed lightsaber is similar to a double-bladed one, but it has hinges on it to assist in folding. Pong Krell was a Jedi who served during the Clone Wars. He wielded a Hinged Double-bladed lightsaber.

4 Spinning Lightsaber

Most of the Inquisitors we have seen in the Rebels and Clone Wars series wielded the Double-Bladed spinning lightsaber. The hilt is advanced and can be rotated in a circle that allows the two blades to rotate and build a defense.

5 Dual-Phase Lightsaber

The Dual-phase lightsaber hilt allows the user to adjust the length of the lightsaber blade. The average length of a lightsaber blade is 1m, but a Dual-Phase lightsaber can have a length of up to 3m.

6 Crossguard Lightsaber

This is a traditional type of lightsaber hilt with the shape of medieval age swords and axes. It works like a standard hilt but is more graceful. Kylo Ren wielded a Crossguard lightsaber hilt.

7 Curved-Hilt lightsaber

As the name implies, the Curved-hilt lightsaber is curved. This type of hilt provides a better grip. The Force-Users who practice Makashi Form, or Jar’Kai, prefer to use a Curved-Hilt lightsaber. The known users are Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress.

8 Lightsaber Pistol

The lightsaber hilt also acts as a pistol in this type. The energy from the Kyber crystal can be used to power powerful blasts. Ezra Bridger has this type of lightsaber hilt that can shoot blasters, but his lightsaber hilt also emits a blade.

9 Lightsaber Rifle

A lightsaber rifle is just like a lightsaber pistol. It is a rifle and hilt merged. It shoots energy blasters like a pistol.

10 Lightsaber Pike

It is a unique type of lightsaber hilt. As seen in Clone Wars and Rebels, the Jedi Temple Guards wielded the lightsaber pike. It looks like a Double-bladed lightsaber, but the hilt is much longer than a double-bladed lightsaber hilt.

11 Cane Lightsaber

A cane lightsaber hilt looks just like a cane. Made of wood, it aids users in keeping the lightsaber concealed while resembling a cane. After Darth Maul lost his double-bladed lightsaber, he wielded a lightsaber cane.

12 Training Lightsaber

A training lightsaber looks like a standard lightsaber. Its purpose is to train younglings. This lightsaber hilt is small and emits a blade that cannot cut anything. We saw Master Yoda training the younglings with lightsabers in Phantom Menace.

13 Shoto Lightsaber

A Shoto word came from the Japanese language, and it means small. Smaller persons, like Master Yoda, typically employ this type because of its tiny hilt. Ahsoka Tano also used a yellow Shoto lightsaber, as seen in Clone Wars.

14 Guard Shoto

The shape of the Guard Shoto hilt is like a Tonfa, and this type of hilt is perfect for defense. You can also use it for aggression. This hilt is strong enough to resist a lightsaber strike. It is composed of Phrik, a substance impervious to lightsabers.

15 Great lightsaber

The great lightsaber is for larger individuals and has giant-sized hilts. The Jedis, who belonged to large-sized races, normally opt for this type of lightsaber hilt. Its blade can reach up to 2 meters in length.

How do I choose a Lightsaber hilt?

The lightsaber hilts you get in the real world do not contain Diatium batteries or Kyber crystals. If you want to know how to choose a lightsaber hilt, make sure the material of the hilt is durable. I recommend picking a lightsaber hilt made of Aluminium material.

Also, pick a hilt with your favorite designs. The hilt should be comfortable in the hands, and the batteries should be able to go on for a whole day before getting low.

These are some of the details of Star Wars lightsaber hilts we get to know from the show so far. Until we learn more about these amazing Far, Far away Galaxy, May the Force be with you.
