An Informative Guide About Black Lightsabers Meanings and History

The lightsaber is an iconic weapon of the Star Wars saga. It is an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. We see many types and colors of a lightsaber in Star Wars. Some of the colors are very common, like green, blue, and red. Likewise, other colors are rare in the galaxy, such as purple, yellow, and white lightsabers. But there is one lightsaber that is only one of its kind.

We know one black lightsaber known as the Darksaber. This saber did not appear in any of the movie trilogies. But, it was an important part of the series counterparts. The Darksaber first appeared in Clone Wars, then in the Rebels series, Mandalorian series, and finally in “Book of Boba Fett.” 

So, what is this black lightsaber? What is its history? And why is it different from other lightsabers?

Black Lightsaber (The Darksaber)

The Darksaber is a unique lightsaber. It has a dark blade, but the outer edges are bright. Unlike other lightsabers, the Darksaber’s blade has the shape of primitive swords. The hilt’s shape also resembles the swords, not lightsabers. The Darksaber first appeared in ancient times, even before the Jedi/Mandalorian Wars. 

Darksaber Origin

A Jedi named Tarre Vizsla first created the Darksaber. Tarre Vizsla was the only Mandalorian who became a Jedi. The Jedi Order and the Mandalorians did not get along well. But Tarre Vizsla acted as a bridge between the two and created peace among these two powers.

Since its origin, the Darksaber has been considered a holy weapon among the Mandalorians. After Tarre Vizsla, this black lightsaber has been passed down to different generations of Mandalorian tribes. 

What is Darksaber Made of? (Darksaber Hilt)

The answer to this question remained unknown for more than a decade until the “Book of Boba Fett.” series. It is told in the series that this black lightsaber does not contain any Kyber crystal inside it. A Kyber crystal is famous as it is the powerhouse of a lightsaber. So, how does Darksaber work without the crystal?

The Darksaber hilt is made up of high-quality pure Beskar material. Beskar is an unknown metallic material. But this type of Beskar was not seen by the Mandalorians even. The Beskar also powers the inside functions of the Beskar material. How the electronic functions take place inside it is unknown. Although, the black color of the blade is certainly due to the Beskar powering the Darksaber hilt.

Some believe there is a black lightsaber crystal fixed inside. But, we do not find trusted proof for this sort of information. 

Who Has the Darksaber?

When Tarre Vizsla died, the Jedi Order kept the Darksaber in the Jedi temple, but the Mandalorians wanted it back. It started a famous Jedi/Mandalorians war. The Mandalorians lost the war, but they got the Darksaber back.

After getting it back, the Mandalorians developed a rule that anyone who wins the black lightsaber in a duel has the right to keep it. He will also rule the Mandalorian throne. Since then, the black lightsaber has been passed from one generation to another generation within Mandalorian tribes. 

We saw the Darksaber for the first time in the Clone Wars series. A Mandalorian named Tee Vizsla was the owner of this Darksaber. Then it went into the hands of Darth Maul, who came to rule the Mandalore and defeated Tee Vizsla. It remained in the hands of Maul in the entire Clone Wars and a few seasons of Rebels. He kept it hidden on his home planet, Dathomir.

In the third season of the Rebels series, Sabine Wren found this lightsaber on Dathomir. She kept it and went back to Mandalore, where she fought against Tee Vizsla and won. That means she had the right to the throne and the Darksaber. But she gave it to Bo-Katan instead. 

Bo-Katan lost the lightsaber to an Imperial leader, Moff Gideon. The Darksaber finally went into the hands of Din Djarin when he defeated Gideon. The Mandalorians were in the hope of getting a leader as strong as Tarre Vizsla. Many believe Din Djarin can be the one who can unite the Mandalorians. Right now, Din Djarin has the black lightsaber, as seen in the “Book of Boba Fett.”

What is the Meaning of Black Lightsaber?

We know every lightsaber color in Star Wars has a meaning. The green and blue colors define the Jedis. The Red color is the color of the Sith, while the purple color means the users know both Sides of the Force. The same goes for the other colors of lightsabers.

But what about the black lightsaber? Does it mean something? Well, all the lightsabers are always wielded by the Force-users except the Darksaber. The Darksaber is passed from generations of non-Force users. It does not have a certain meaning. But, it has become a symbol of power, as we discussed above.

The black lightsaber is the symbol of holding the Mandalorian throne. Anyone who wins it in a duel can keep the Darksaber and the throne of Mandalore. The Mandalorians have been following it as a ritual for hundreds of generations.

Darksaber vs Lightsaber

The Darksaber may look very different from the other lightsabers, but it is pretty similar to a normal lightsaber in functions. As we know, the Darksaber ignites a dark blade that has the same cutting ability as any other lightsaber. It can not cut what a lightsaber cannot. It could not cut the Beskar rod, as seen in a duel between Moff Gideon and Din Djarin. 

So, both are the same weapons, just different functions. A Darksaber vs lightsaber fight will have the same result as a lightsaber against a lightsaber. The fight’s result will depend on the user, not the weapon.

Is there another Black Lightsaber in Star Wars?

Every Star Wars fan only knew of one black lightsaber. There was no mention of any other black lightsaber anywhere until the release of the novel “Star Wars: The High Republic.” 

If you see the cover of this novel, you see many Jedis holding unique lightsabers. But the most amazing one is on the right side. An unknown Jedi is holding a black lightsaber.

This black lightsaber looks different from the famous Darksaber. The hilt of this black lightsaber is the same as any other lightsaber, unlike the Darksaber. Similarly, it does not have a sword-like blade. It means it is not the Darksaber of the Mandalore.

This uncovers the truth that there are more black lightsabers other than the Darksaber. At least, they existed in the ancient times of the High Republic. Will we get to know more about this black lightsaber? Surely! But we will have to wait for the release of more comics to get a better idea.
