History Behind Lightsabers, A lightsaber is an iconic weapon in the Star Wars galaxy. The Jedis and Sith Lords have been using this weapon in a continuous war between good and evil. Jedis are using lightsabers to bring peace to the galaxy. Sith lords use lightsabers to get power and control.

Since the 1970s, we have watched lightsabers for forty years. The original trilogy was the subject of the first film. Then we returned to the Old Republic era. There, we also saw Master Yoda. The sources state that Master Yoda lived for over a millennium. For over 850 years, he was a Jedi, and he never left home without his Shoto lightsaber.

Jedi have been using lightsaber since ancient times as we took the example of Master Yoda. So, anyone may wonder how old lightsabers are? What was the first lightsaber color? What is Star Wars First lightsaber? And Who made the first lightsaber? What is a Protosaber, and what is its relation to a lightsaber? Let’s dive deep into the history of Star Wars’ first lightsaber.

History Behind Lightsabers

Lightsaber Meaning

A lightsaber is a laser sword that can cut through almost everything. We have seen it cutting through metal doors and deflect blasters. The hilt creates a very high-temperature plasma blade that melts anything it touches.

More than 15 Star Wars legends lightsaber types exist in Star Wars. It includes the famous Double-bladed lightsaber and the Crossguard lightsaber. The blade can have many colors such as purple, green, blue, red, white, yellow, orange, Dark, and bronze.

History Of Lightsaber

We do not have to go into the history of lightsabers. Actually, we have to go back into the prehistoric era. A time when there was no sign of the Republic. No one had ever thought of a civilized age. The lightsabers started appearing at approximately 25000 BBY.

In prehistoric times, two races ruled the galaxy. One was known as Je’daii, the ancestors of Jedis and Sith lords. Most of the Je’daii were Force-sensitives. There was no concept of Jedis or Sith, but they were able to control and use Force at that time as well.

Jedi had learned the secret of the Force but in a different way than modern Jedis. They saw Force as three aspects of nature. Dark Force, the Light Force, and the balance Force of nature. The code of the Jedi was to bring balance to the Force. Anyone who fell too deep into the Dark or Light Side of the Force had to leave the Jedi Order. They had to go to a moon, meditate there, and bring balance to the Force. The popular weapon Je’daiis at that time was Protosaber.

1) Rakatas

The rivals of the Je’daii were known as Rakata. It was an ancient race that was much more advanced in technology than any other race in the galaxy. Rakata also developed hyperspace jumps and made traveling to all the planets easier. Rakata was an advanced race, but they were also very cruel. They used to steal the resources of other planets and kill the entire race.

Like the Je’daii order, they had built their own infinite Empire. Both these races had something powerful on their sides. Je’daii excelled in the knowledge of the Force, and Rakatas had technology in their hands.

Both these races did not like each other, and they engaged in warfare many times. To counter each other, both the Je’daii and Rakatas had developed weapons. These weapons became the foundation for Star Wars’ first blade. These two weapons are known as Forcesabers and Proto sabers.

2) Forcesabers

Rakatas invent Forcesabers to fight against the sorcerers Je’daiis. They developed artificial crystals to channel Dark energy and create a laser blade. The Forcesabers emitted laser blades like lightsabers, but they were different in composition. They looked like today’s Star Wars lightsaber toys but much more advanced from the inside.

Some Rakata’s Forcesaber looked like modern lightsabers, and some looked like lightsaber pikes. Like the modern lightsabers, Forcesabers have different colors of blades too. The normal color of the Forcesaber blade was purple and light blue. The warriors of this race used orange-colored Forcesabers. Some even have yellow-colored blades.

They did not use Kyber crystal or Force connection with their Forcesabers. So, these weapons were weaker than modern lightsabers.

3) Protosabers

To counter Rakata’s Forcesabers, Je’daii Order developed their own weapon called Protosabers. Sources tell us that Je’daii developed their weapon much later than Rakatas. They took the idea from Rakata’s weapon and then developed their own.

Rakatas used crystals to channel Dark energy in Forcesabers, but Je’daii used Force of nature instead. That is why Protosaber is also considered the first version of modern lightsabers. Je’daii first used batteries to power the blade.

Since they did not know about Kyber crystals, they could not produce as strong a blade as a modern-day lightsaber.

Protosabers had another limitation. Je’daiis used an external battery and connected it to the hilt with a cable. This cable restricted swift movements. It was also a hindrance during the fight. If the cable got cut, the weapons became useless. They hadn’t understood a true lightsaber meaning but soon realized the need for a better version.

4) The First Blade

A Rakata’s attack on Je’daii Order on Tython planet became a reason for the invention of the modern lightsaber. Jedi Order repelled them with their Protosabers, but something worse took place. A civil war between the Je’daii Order eventually began.

Remember the concept of Force balance Je’daii developed? Some Je’daii abandoned the Order and turned completely to the Dark Side of the Force. Others had to join the Light Side to control the opposite side.

The Force Wars began, and the concept of the Jedis and Sith lords appeared for the first time. Both the Jedis and Sith lords wielded Protosabers to fight against each other. The Jedi naturally began to protect the people while Sith lords wanted control.

During the Force Wars, Star Wars’ first blade appeared in the galaxy. This lightsaber had a natural Kyber crystal fixed inside the hilt. This crystal enhanced the power of the blade a hundred times fold.

The blade was powerful enough to cut down metal doors or big rocks. It did not have any cable to attach the battery anymore. This modern lightsaber used Diantum power cells instead. These cells are powerful enough that Jedis did not need to charge them for a few years.

Who Made the First Lightsaber?

A Jedi Master known as Weapon Master developed the first lightsaber. We are not sure when he created the Star Wars first lightsaber. He may have built it before the Force Wars, but this weapon was hidden for some time.

During the Force Wars, the member of the High Council Rajivari found this lightsaber. He knew the importance of this weapon. He carved all the information of a lightsaber on its hilt to save this knowledge. He handed the hilt to droid keepers that kept them safe.

The lightsaber came into normal use during Cold Wars. Scorekeeper’s herald recovered this lightsaber from the droid keepers. He and his apprentice studied the engravings. They uncovered the knowledge for more modern-day lightsabers. So, who made the first lightsaber? He was known as a weapon master, an ancestor of the Jedis. Although, the lightsaber came into normal use decades after he discovered it.

Creating a modern-day lightsaber took thousands of years and many evolutionary stages. Both the Forcesaber and Protosaber’s combination resulted in the modern-day lightsabers.

What Was the First Lightsaber Color?

There are two ways of looking at this question. If you are asking in a sequential aspect, then we can say it was blue. We saw a lightsaber for the first time in the 1970s when Obi-Wan gave it to Luke Skywalker.

If you are asking from a Star Wars historical perspective, then there is sad news. We do not have enough data to answer your question. No canon story or legends explain the first lightsaber’s color. As we know, Rakatas had Forcesabers, and Je’daii had Protosaber in all colors. So, we can get an idea that all the lightsaber colors from the beginning.
